very satisfied, restored my ruined knives
I have only just started using this, but all seems well thus far. I really like the rubber holder. It actually makes the sharpening process much more comfortable. All my knives were completely ruined by one of those cheap hand held sharpeners that you have to pull the knife through. I used them for years, and was never satisfied even though they were quick. Those sharpeners completely ruined my knives. After receiving this stone, I spent about 30 minutes per knife (5 knives) on the 400 grit side to re-grind the blades down, using as close to a 15-20 degree honing angle as possible. I'm not an experienced knife sharpener, so for me the hardest part is keeping the honing angle consistent and learning the proper pressure to apply. Even as a beginner, I was able to restore the knives and they are cutting far better now than they have in years. Most importantly, I've found (my wife that is) that the sharpness holds much longer with the same amount of use. They are still not razor sharp, but I am tackling them slowly and deliberately because I want to try and maintain a consistent honing angle. I think a few more times of practice will make a big difference in my technique. But I'm looking into an angle guide. Overall, I'm very satisfied with the product thus far and would recommend it to anyone looking to restore and keep their knives sharp, provided they have the skill and patience to learn the proper technique.

Take your time and learn to do this correctly, you will like the results!
I have a few different knife sharpening tools, some of which work extremely well on short, rigid blades such as the ones on my pocketknives. I have two types of Lansky sharpening systems (turnbox with rods, flat stones with angle guides) that do a fantastic job on blades 4" maximum, as well as the old Buck Washita/Arkansas hard stones. None of them worked particularly well on longer, more flexible kitchen cutlery. When I first got this stone, I went to work on an old dull Henckels chef's knife, and an older, cheap butcher knife. Neither knife was usable in the kitchen anymore and my attempts at sharpening with my other sharpeners led to only moderate improvement. In fact, the short rods on the Lansky turnbox sharpener and my own carelessness led to me getting a nasty cut from the butcher knife (yeah, and guess who bought mesh gloves after the bleeding stopped? That's ok, stupidity SHOULD make one's life harder. Lesson learned!) I spent about 30 minutes with each blade on the 400 grit side of the stone. The rubber base allowed me to concentrate on taking my time and trying to maintain a consistent angle. After 30 minutes each, the edges neither looked "right" nor "felt" right; I thought that I had dulled the blades rather than sharpened them. I was frustrated and not particularly happy with the stone. Then I grabbed a couple of carrots... and discovered that these two previously unsatisfactory knives were now QUITE satisfactory indeed. I spent more time with each blade on the 1000 grit side of the stone. Again, the blades just didn't "feel" the same as what I was accustomed to using my other sharpeners. These two old "beater" knives are now quite competitive with any blade in our kitchen. When time permits I plan to sharpen some other old knives that I've come close to trashing because I was never able to get a decent edge on them. I love this stone, and would recommend it to anyone. This is not a "quick" sharpening device; you need to take your time, but the results are well worth it. Once I got my head wrapped around the difference in "feel" from what I was accustomed to, I became more proficient in the stone's use. Numerous YouTube videos as well as the eBook supplied via email after I received the stone were of enormous help to me. One thing I recommend is that you place some sort of barrier underneath the rubber mat so that the wet grit from the stone doesn't scratch up your countertops. I have ancient ugly Formica counters that should have been replaced 40 years ago, so I didn't worry much, but if I had nice counter tops, I'd be worried about the wet grit marring the counter tops.

and it worked great! 400 is a pretty low grit for kitchen ...
I just got this and tried it out on a knife that I hadn't sharpened properly in over a year, and it worked great! 400 is a pretty low grit for kitchen knives, but mine are not very high quality so I don't mind shaving off a bit too much when I sharpen them, and it is a really good grit for repair work. 1000 is common for a first-stage sharpening, and I'm going to get a stone with higher grits for refining and polishing the edge.

Thumbs Up...
I ordered this as an experiment in a way. If I liked using it, instead of sandpaper to sharpen my plane, chisels and spokeshave, I'd step up and buy the more expensive stones. Well the jokes on me as there is no need to go very expensive for the few times a year I need to sharpen my tools. This stone works just fine. It is annoying to turn it over while it's wet, so now do I buy a 1000/3000 and put the 1000 side up? A fun quandary. It works as advertised for my shop tools better than expected.

Buy it with no regrets...
Customer Service these days is somewhat a thing of the past but Sharp Pebble is an exception.. They really want you to be happy with their product and communicate that as soon as you become a customer, i have bough the 400/1000 and the 3000/8000 stones. excellent stones for the money... Only used them a couple times so far but with excellent results... Cuts fairly fast, may not be as fast as $100 or more stone but fast enough, has a decent slurry when using harder steels like 62rc also comes with flattening stone... what are you waiting for?? dull knives are dangerous buy it now you wont regret it...

Sharpen Up Effortlessly
This whetstone does an excellent job of restoring the fine edge of my kitchen knives. Easy to use after soaking the stone in warm water for 15-20 minutes. Comes with a rubber base that holds the stone for security and safety. For a knife that is impossibly dull, it would take a lot of work to bring back. For knives that are maintained regularly, this is ideal. Two -three minutes and you have a safe knife. It is the dull knife that will bite you. My favorite time to sharpen my knives is while watching TV, I can ignore the commercials with some productive work. Anyone that really cooks would appreciate this as a gift imo.

High Quality, Exceptional Value
I have purchased many high quality stones over the years. I have an expensive collection of kitchen and hunting knives. I was surprised by the quality of this 400/1000 grit stone. These stones performed repeatable quality sharpening. I touched up an older Honyaki sushi knife and maintained the same quality that I had sharpening a Wusthof gourmet knife. I would strongly recommend these stones for general all purpose sharpening. The stones are equally suitable for beginners and those with years of sharpening.

Great stone,great value
Ordering waterstones can be so confusing. I wanted one combo stone that would let me sharpen my kitchen knives without breaking the bank, and I settled on this one. I love this stone. I can quickly get rid of small edge imperfections, then hone the blade to a fine edge. I'm using it mainly for Japanese knives but it works just as well on Western blades. The rubber non-slip base is very effective. Perhaps I could get a more perfect edge with a wider variety of different stones, but that would run into some serious money. This one suits my needs at a great price. Update: A couple of months later and I'm still liking this stone a lot.My knives go through tomato skins with NO pressure other than the weight of the blade. That's plenty good enough for me.

Good initializing stone
I've only had this for a couple of weeks, but so far it seems to be a really good stone. I would normally test for a month or better before reviewing but I can tell already these stones are worth the money. I normally use Arkansas stone and decided to try some wetstones for a change these were pretty inexpensive so I figured what the heck. They are packaged and shipped well so I had no chipping. The stones were flat to begin with so I sharpened a couple of chisels. After that I had to use the flattening stone, but it didn't take much to get the stone dead flat again. Even verified it with my combination square. I'm happy with the purchase. Keep in mind these stones are for setting up your bevel so you will need a higher grit like the 3000/6000 to get a razor sharp edge. I've been using this stone for some of my really dull stuff then going to my medium and then fine Arkansas stones followed by a leather strop. Razor sharp chisels and I mean that literally, I've got bald spots on my arms from chisels that would hardly cut before. FYI... I've kept this stone in a tub of water this whole time with no problems.

Did exactly what I hoped.
Hello. I haven't had this stone very long, but I'm so excited that I decided to buy it. I think it's important to say that I'm not a beginner at knife sharpening. I've loved sharpening knives for the last 35 years. I started simply and have worked my way through many different systems and techniques. I purchased the spyderco sharp maker a few years ago and used a ton. I bought ultra fine stones for it and used it as intended. The results were good, but I wanted sharper. Next, I purchased a Ken Onion Work Sharp about 1.5 years ago and used it quite a bit. It was fine, not awesome and if you weren't careful you could really screw up your blade. I've done a lot of reading over the last couple of months and decided to try some water stones. I know these might not be considered the highest quality by some, but I didn't want to lay out a ton of money. The reviews seemed good so I bought it. After 4 knives I can hardly contain my excitement! They are insanely sharp! (I also got a Bearmoo 3K/8K a couple of days ago after trying these) These aren't for beginners. IMO. That doesn't mean you can't get them, but they require an eye for detail, precision and patience. They work and work well. Start on a decent kitchen knife. Focus on the your angle and just get started. Take your time. Don't try no get your bevel in a few strokes. Your patience will be rewarded. I like the flattening stone. I'll probably get a bigger diamond to do the flattening but it's OK for now.. I love it. I'd buy it again in a heart beat.
